Chopper and the midnight movie art punk / Euro-dance subversions of "Springtime" (Official Video)

"sing me a love song and kiss me like you love me..."

The artfully caustic Official Video of "Springtime" by Chopper, the Copenhagen, the darkly drawn, dance-wave, art punk solo-project of Jonatan K. Magnussen (The Love Coffin) is a wild, provocative scattershot of visuals that have a sense of subversion. The imagery cast like an intense form of glam soaked Tropicália feels like an amalgam of film-makers like Panos Cosmatos, Luis Buñuel, Andy Warhol after a postage stamp of acid with an Absinthe chaser. It perfectly matches Magnussen's sonic imagery with it disco thumped, euro wave meets experimental industrial punk and alt pop atmospheres.

Press notes add some more about the psychedelic seeds of "Springtime".

[“Springtime” is the first single of Chopper’s upcoming release, “Shock Pop Vol. I”. The song was made during winter in the pandemic, and illuminates the feeling of isolation and longing we’ve all gotten to know so well during those years. Dancing on a thin line between comedy and tragedy - bittersweet and romantic, ugly and possessive - Chopper continues an artistic exploration of the inherent dualities of the human condition, celebrating and exploring topics such as love, sexuality and carefree joy. Drawing inspiration from the alienated glossy synth-glamour of Pet Shop Boys, the raw industrial bone-shaking beats and noise of Skinny Puppy and the strange nostalgic rave of Underworld - recontextualized in a unique modern context (with the rare mark of a truly original artistic sensibility).]

"Springtime" is daring, to say the least, but has a sense of proto-punk fun. In some ways it might be a punkified glam version of yacht rock if the stately boat was taken over by a collision of Kraftwerk, The Normal, Bauhaus, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Scissor Sisters, ABBA and The DeFranco Family.

"Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, Chopper is a dark, danceable and playful solo-project by Jonatan K. Magnussen (The Love Coffin) feeding on anything from eurodance to glam rock, harsh industrial to disco (Chopper himself prefers the term “shock pop”). Already receiving attention for his intense live shows, enigmatic music videos and flamboyant expressive attitude, Chopper is all about a fine line between tragedy and comedy. Although reminiscent of oldschool horror flicks and synthetic bubblegum pastiche, don’t fool yourself - underneath lies an undeniable gut-wrenching personal force. Imagine a carnival from hell, a fun, haunting and amusing little nightmare, the sound of untamed youth and the longing for love; all somehow elegantly yet forcefully contrasting the bleakest personal observations. With great charm, diversity and somewhat diabolic undertones, Chopper demands to be included among the unholy (and unwritten) canon of weird, haunting, homeless, lost pop figures of the past and present. Chopper lives well and free in a strange but captivating world. Long live the wicked!”
