"rebuilding your faith is like acid rain..."
When a song can feel somber and yet lift you up. When a song can offer sagely advice and self deprecating bruises that spell out "one can hope". When a song is beautiful in it's sonic sparseness but also feels sonically perfect. When a song contains a vocal countenance and electric guitar notes that does a dance with it. When a song feels utterly relatable but also sweepingly cinematic. "Run" by askew songwriter/producer Jethro Pickett is one such song.
Thoroughly moody with frayed hope around the edges, the track was recorded in the 120 year old boat shed that doubles as Pickett’s studio and residence. The track features Ani Lou (Kate Southorn) and Conor Deasy on vocals, Beau Thomas (drums) and Adrian Whitehead (bass). Recorded and mixed by Pickett, the track was mastered by Maria Rice & Jeff Lipton (Jeff Tweedy, Kevin Morby), Peerless, Boston and released via Phill Calvert’s Behind the Beat Records.
About the truly pretty and bewildered Official Video"
[Currently based in Lutruwita/Tasmania, this veritable prince of freak folk has teamed up with Edward Housden and David Rusanow for the film clip of his latest single, ‘Run’. The track marks Pickett’s first release since his Australian Music Prize nominated sophomore album, France.
Shot around Coburg in the summer of ‘23, the clip for ‘Run’ plays with transformation and movement, showing Pickett at times pillion passenger on Vespa (driven by Yanni Warnock). Such motion is juxtaposed with eerily still, suburban mise-en-scènes.]

For me, Jethro Pickett's decision or improvisational happening regarding "Run"'s cadence, the bass sway, the rhythm guitar's sense of falling is everything. It provides a death marching framework for Pickett to hang his wonderfully melancholic words onto. And his vocal countenance sad and resolute are so fucking beautiful.
