Suzy Callahan and the intimate folk conversations of "Out of Proportion"

"Open door policy / Come on in and see / Nothin' here to hide / Let your conscience be your guide / Didn't know what to say / So I said something strange / Soon as it came out of my mouth, phew / Everything went south..."

Sometimes you hear a song that feels less like a song and more like a personal confessional. Feelings that have to be exorcised more than expressed to make the world a little more right instead of created to expand social views or Spotify listens. The inspired, cathartic "Out of Proportion" by singer songwriter Suzy Callahan feels like that kind of song. Now this is not to say that this track is not a crowd pleaser, it most certainly is but I say all this just to say that the seeds of this sonic expression feel like they are buried deeply in emotional soil that Callahan turns over.

This lyrical passage sticks with me:

"You're a real piece of work, they said
Euphemism for your a jerk, I said
I like to live up to my rep, she said
Hold on to the death
T-shirt says feminist
Glasses taped up, duct tape
Smeared on makeup, I see
I think you get the gist"

Then punctuated by the pointed chorus:

"Blown out
Out of proportion
Out of proportion
It's blown out
Out of proportion
Out of proportion"

Callahan's vocal countenance feels earnest with a double sided patina of sadness and retribution. You get the feeling that her words have a moral center with empathy underneath. At the same time, "Out of Proportion" feels contoured with improvised edges, rough around the edges, ID rock or folk (whatever you choose).

Suzy:

This is not just a hobby. I take it seriously and I almost never laugh. At the very least, I don’t laugh out loud. I stifle any troublesome mirth so that I can focus intently on the goal at hand. This goal is to finish at least one song and possibly another so that I have at least enough to fill up a good old-fashioned album. Hopefully, someone will like something about it. Praise be!
