From the very onset, "Travis the Chimp" by Los Angeles born and raised independent artist Ian the Idiot is exquisitely somber while at the same time, sonically beautiful. ITI imbues his melancholic melodies with an endearing quality, whether it is the blend of plaintive piano pushing the story along. or ITI's easy to swallow late 70's pop vocal aesthetic. you feel the human connectivity, the communal nature of all respectful people having an intrinsic worth even though some of the lyrical content may sound funny or peak your curiosity.
If you type this title's song on line, you will undoubtedly find the dark, truly tragic story that are the seeds of this song. You can totally feel, enjoy this impactful song without knowing the story and I warn you that the digger you deep the worst you will feel. Considering that chimps share 98% of the same genetic make up as humans make this entire subject even more concerning, more disturbing. Makes the social commentary here more sharp and might make you wonder if that 2% difference is what makes us humans so uncaring.

This from Ian the Idiot:
"This is the first single from an upcoming album I will be releasing in late October 2023. The song is lush, meticulously arranged, and meant to evoke a complicated feeling of understated dread. Travis the Chimp was a socialized chimpanzee in Connecticut whose life ended in a tragic finale. While the song may at first sound pretty and whistful, my hope is for the less-pleasant implications to emerge from the underbelly of the song upon multiple listens. This was recorded and mixed by me in a garage in Los Angeles, with some additional string performances done by a group called Severn Duo on Fiverr. My friend also played a little clarinet for the breakdown."
In the final analysis, "Travis the Chimp" (the song) is a gorgeous dark comedy and even darker tragedy and a plea, a reminder to look at our own humanity and how it is manifested to others.
Hey, humans are slow to evolve but we are (I think). I can't go to zoos anymore or Sea World. Be good, be thoughtful out there.

I'm a Los Angeles-born-and-raised independent artist, and I've been writing and recording songs DIY for over 15 years, starting as a kid in my dad's garage (he's a guitar teacher and musician himself). I've played in a number of bands around the city's "indie circuit," including the bands Pkwy, Small Forward, Yucky Bangs, Frank Pellegrino, Blu Wilson, and Loosies. I currently live in Hawthorne, CA (hometown of my favorite band of all time, The Beach Boys) with my wife and two kids, working a day job in some corporation somewhere.
