There is something devilish, a carnival high mischief about "Village Mentality" by Newcastle's alt psych punks TV Death and you feel the crazy come on right away. From the onset, the addictive bass line, warbled Farfisa-esque organs, slamming drums draw you in and when the gleefully audacious lead vocals drop in and guitars scream out there is a true sense that all hell has broken loose. As punk raucous as this feels, there is a power pop prowess happening too, smart and unbridled like a cross-generational amalgam of Ian Dury and the Blockheads, The Hives, New York Dolls, The Clash and Bay City Rollers (or not) or an amalgam of Absinthe and laughing gas.
[On the track they said, “Village Mentality's character embodies the mindset to blindly believe everything you see in the media. During the time of writing it, many newspapers were blaming the issues of the country on immigration. There was a growing unrest toward minority groups in some circles and in some small towns, which heavily inspired the premise. The song's story follows one of these hateful news cycles as the villagers wake up to eagerly point their finger after seeing the headlines. Written on the bass, the song needed a bouncing progression to lie underneath it, as more and more instruments joined in just like the mob, before ripping into the main riff and chase.”]
The amazing Official Video lampoons this idea of societies so dumb that they will follow any false prophets (political or mediawise) and believe what ever is transmitted on TV or our smart phones. FUCK, in America, just think that we have a delusional narcissistic megalomaniac in Donald Trump who is promising to execute a military man for doing his job (and speaking his mind), thinks that shoplifters should be shot, and wants to be President so he can pardon himself from 90 different crimes (indictments pending). All the while around 30% of the country are his sycophantic followers who will seemingly do his bidding and will rally behind him. We are, folks, in crazy town and a lot of the world currently is.
"Village Mentality" is from TV Death's upcoming EP "The God, The One and The Devil" dropping on the 24th of November (2023).
From Liner Notes, on the video:
[The concept for the videos released alongside the EP are centered around taking modern societal issues and painting them with B-horror movie visuals. Shot by Firestone Video, ‘Village Mentality’ is the third part of the 5 part series and we see the main character being chased through the woods by an angry mob- a visual metaphor for the ‘public opinion’. The angry mob, played by an array of TV Death’s close friends, hold up a mirror to the effect of the media on society in a comical and exaggerated fashion.]

Combining punk with psychedelic ideals, Newcastle's TV Death are back with their first single ‘Village Mentality’ from their upcoming EP ‘The God, The One and The Devil’. The single, which comes out 27th September 2023, is accompanied by a music video which is the third chapter of the overarching story put together by all videos from the EP. The EP - ‘The God, The One and The Devil’ is set to release on the 24th November 2023.
TV Death have emerged onto the UK scene, transmitting a potent brand of garage rock, with dark lyrics delivered with a distinctly sharp abrasiveness. ‘Village Mentality’ describes the influence of news cycles on the public’s opinion, painting select groups of people as the root of their problems, scapegoating societal groups and distracting their audiences from the real cause. The track is a combination of post punk and horror pop, comparable to The Damned or The Horrors’ debut album ‘Strange House’- making it the perfect soundtrack to lead us into the Halloween season.

2021 proved to be an auspicious start for the group, as they played a host of dates across the UK, including gigs in London, Glasgow, Manchester and their native north-east, where they promoted their EP Isolation with a sold-out debut. Key single Crank Bugs was named one of Louder Than War’s top 100 tracks of the year, while the title track received airplay from BBC 6 Music. Realising their potential, Wipe Out Music Publishing moved quickly to sign the band in 2022.
Earmarked as an act to watch in 2023, TV Death are working on their most ambitious projects yet, featuring material produced by Sam Grant of Pigsx7, and are raring to take their scorched-earth live show on the road after warming up with support slots with hard hitting acts such as Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Yabba and Hallan.
