"Bend us to your goals / We’re made to serve your word / Craving your control / We’re play dough for your soul..."
Somewhere between a tropical jungle journey, vast desert rock vistas, experimental art punk escapes and a silhouetted spaghetti western, the shape shifting "Play Dough", by German, Berlin based psychedelic art rock outfit Atomic Fruit, is a dense oscillating piece of sonic mercury, malleable, healing in the right hands and, maybe, toxic in the wrong ones. Maybe I don't even know what that means but, then, listening to the sheer artistry of Atomic Fruit makes me want to wax poetic.
The dense musicality here as displayed in such a synergistic manner by Martin Lundfall offering lyrics, lead vocals, bass, synthesizer, electronics, trumpet, Raphaël Giraldi with vocals, guitar, Farhad Mirza on guitar and Federico Lenzi on drums, takes you on a journey, a vast one but not only that puts you in a deep full body groove and head space. Music like this can seemingly stop your bodies time clock and just put you in a wonderful trance, a meditation, an alternate reality, cinema on high.
"She keeps us in a mason jar with some holes poked to breathe
Builds herself a pedestal and ask us not to kneel
Tucked in underneath your tongue she bleeds into your speech
At the pouring of the waterfall still gushing in your ear
Feels like I’m going nocturnal again"

Atomic Fruit’s debut album Play Dough is a joyful feast of contradictions. It is mysterious yet catchy, dark but playful.
Blending trip-hop, psychedelic rock and ambient music, Play Dough molds ear-worm riffs, samples, and sound design with intoxicating grooves into compositions which evolve and mutate over time. The result is a genre-bending, unhinged, apocalyptic dance ceremony which embraces the surreal.
With a name alluding to the post war mutation breeding experiments of atomic gardening, the music of Atomic Fruit is as eclectic as the international group itself:
“We see music as a venue to channel subliminal, to offer a brief escape from the otherwise dystopian world which parasites our attention. Sometimes that is achieved by merging contrasting ideas, pulling the listener in several directions at once. Sometimes it means making enough noise to temporarily obliterate them.”
