Philosopher Pirate and the alt rock psychedelic sweetness and bitters of "Fragile Fragments"

"Fragile systems / Fragile minds / Fragile egos / Tied to mine / Fragile brushes / Fragile lines / Fragile faucets / Dripping time..."

The joyful bitters of "Fragile Fragments" by Asbury Park, New Jersey alt rocker Philosopher Pirate, the musical moniker of singer songwriter, musician Mike Kuzan, bristles with an unfettered psychedelic rock classicalism. The jammy intricacies from jangly guitar rhythms, raucous pounding bass lines, Farfisa-esque organ sounds, blistering and melodic lead guitar lines and Kuzan's expressively potent vocal countenance that, for me, possesses an alt rock / blues rock howl with a punk rock spirit, something between Chris Barron and Iggy Pop (in their halcyon days), feels purely rock as possibly artistically seeded from the 70's.

"Fragile Fragments" move at a fast hustle but around the half way point drops a time sig change and foray into trippier sort of Pink Floyd-ian head spaces, maybe from straight psychedelia to space rock and such. The departure is not jarring, Philosopher Pirate, makes it feel effortless.

Of the track Kuzan shares:

"We are always so close to life and death, heaven and hell, love and hate. And all the other bullshit... fucking eat it. And then process it and turn it into something beautiful. Life is fragile but as we spin on this earth together finding meaning, putting together the puzzle and realizing that together things aren't as fragile as they seem. We wanted to keep the verses raw and direct and then bring the listener to another space in the middle section."

Fragile wars / Fragile peace / Fragile land / Sign the lease / Fragile water / Fragile reef /Fragile earth /Dig deep

Kuzan works with talented other artists and "Fragile Fragments" credits are as follows:

We are all thinkers, we are all thieves.” That’s the mantra of singer-songwriter Mike Kuzan, aka Philosopher Pirate. This New Jersey artist's work has been compared to the sonic stylings of David Bowie, the lyricism of Bob Dylan, and the philosophies of Friedrich Nietzsche. Timeless, Philosopher Pirate navigates waters of sound and poetry that few have ventured toward.

Blending the nostalgia of analog recording with the progress of digital, Kuzan has found a largely untouched genre of rock n’ roll duality. Songs from the 2022 self-titled Philosopher Pirate record ponder love, death, self, and the relationships between these ideas. A seasoned songwriter in his own right, Kuzan brings a level of wisdom to Philosopher Pirate that expands upon his earlier project, Smoke and Mirror Routine.

Philosopher Pirate began in 2022 as a canvas for Kuzan’s art. Released in 2022, the first Philosopher Pirate album featured studio work from various producers and musicians, as well as cover art from several different visual artists. The community of creators that Kuzan surrounded himself with has produced work that leaves listeners wanting more. Lucky for them, Philosopher Pirate will be releasing music throughout 2023 starting with Raven on Friday, March 31.
