"you're harvesting blind / taking the fruits of my labor / you're harvesting blind / taking the fruits of my labor..."
Some songs are so instantly compelling that I start seeing a self produced film in my head. This is the case with the track "Daylight" by London 5 piece alt rock outfit something in the lake. There are dark tensions from the onset, with throbbing beats and guitar lines that sound equally cool but kind of sinister. Leon's vocal countenance, at once steely and artfully pained, "you're harvesting blind / taking the fruits of my labor / you're harvesting blind / taking the fruits of my labor...", feels like one of those opaque stories invovling good people encountering bad people and when I hear this refrain, "was a daylight robbery / you left me cuffed to the water pipe", I have the sense that the movie in my head was penned by S. Craig Zahler or Nic Pizzolatto.
The bending metallic sounds, the memoric escapism, reflections of sound and the emotional brain matter feels so cool, so magnetic, so darkly drawn.
LINER NOTES:
‘Daylight’ was self-produced, two of the band currently study production at Guildhall School of Music, and recorded between bedroom studios in north London, after recording drums at engineer Harri Chambers’ studio in Woolwich. These were stretched, torn, detuned and stitched back together by band member Torin Umrigar and then multi-tracked up with instruments and sounds over a series of months. Tape hissing and re-amped heavy, the resulting track is warm and wild!
