"please don't take my line / I'll drink all your wine / oh oh oh / don't be a cynic / everyone's a critic..."
The disarming roguish assembly and atmospheres of "Critic" by Los Angeles indie folk singer-songwriter Cameron Leahy, and from his upcoming album 'Dizzy Freedom', is so spirited and engaging that before you can fully inhale it, it vanishes into thin air. This feeling is not because it is short, it actually clocks in at nearly 3 minutes but instead, it just feels short because you want it to go on longer, you just want more of it's escapist flare. It might be Leahy's iteration of a kind of Spanish folk aesthetic or the artful adrenaline punch of the strumming but, maybe more so it is the sound of synth trumpets, machine beats and mostly Leahy's vocal countenance that feels at once comfortable but also thoughtful and emotionally wrought. You get the sense that he feels his poetry and poetic license deeply as he sings and moves you like a masterful storyteller.
About "Critic", Leahy shares, "I’m not sure what songs are about when I’m writing them. There isn’t much of a process. I don’t really want to understand if there is a process. I sing, the guitar follows. I write stuff down that sounds good to me. Say what you feel. Lately, I think 'Critic' is kind of about that. Freedom from fear. Accept the risks and take the plunge. Remind your friends to remain wide-eyed in a disorienting and often unsympathetic world. Take your own advice. Find clarity in chaos. Laugh at the absurd. Don’t take it too seriously. Find joy where you can. At least that’s what it means to me right now. Songs mean different things at different times. That’s just my current interpretation."
Enjoy Cameron Leahy here as a musical matador of sorts and while I am not yet sure when "Dizzy Freedom" drops, I will keep a lookout for it.
