Elizabeth M. Drummond and the hopscotch skipping beautiful barbs of "Clowns" (Official Video)

"I so thought it would be a miss / Didn’t think it would end like this / I’m taking off down the road / Gonna get a bit lonely pissed..."

The spinning, hopscotch skip and balanced pick up of "Clowns" by Melbourne, Australia's amazing Elizabeth M. Drummond pulled me down in it's unique void right away, like literally seconds in and then held me down. The song is, is one of those original compositions that feels faintly familiar, like the kind of awkward youthful memories we've all had at one time or another. The utterly beautiful quilted patches of whimsy, of pretty barbs from those acerbic sections of small communities, the porch musicality, the earnest fiddle solo and Drummond's breathy vocal countenance examining truths and talking trash in the most wonderful way, plays on repeat in my head long after the artful song is over. I love it. Big Thief (or maybe more to the point, Adrianne Lenker comes to mind (for whatever reason) and some Simon and Garfunkel song that upon some digging I find doesn't exist (??). I must of made it up in my head.

[Drummond shares, “I wrote this song in 2018, and for some reason, I kept revisiting the demo years later. I re-recorded it with Vincent McIntyre in late 2023. It wasn’t about anyone specifically but rather the idea of walking out on something that you think is wrong or a bit ridiculous, whether it be a situation, a group of people and their values, a belief system, or a past version of yourself that you’ve outgrown or just don’t relate to. I don’t love the idea of calling anyone a “clown” in reality, but in this song, I thought it was kind of funny, and a sense of humour in music is important to me. I really wanted a fiddle in the breakdown of this song, so I sent it to Rowena Wise (an incredible artist, producer & multi-instrumentalist). She did one take at home, sent it back to me and I was obsessed with it.”]

The "Clowns" Official Video is as sophisticatedly killer as the song:

[Drummond shares, “I had a very clear and simple idea for this video - A one shot of a pretentious, old money pool party, with one very slow zoom where the focus isn’t clear until the end when it zooms in on dog shit. My partner (Rick Clifford) shot it and used special FX to create multiple versions of the same person.”]

There are so many just kick-ass artists out there that I hardly know or am just learning about. It is like I never have the time to be in the know about them all. Anyway, I am thrilled to just start to know about Elizabeth M. Drummond. My mother's name was Elizabeth.

Elizabeth M. Drummond grew up in Sydney, before relocating to Melbourne, Australia. Having moved on from ‘Little May’ in 2019, the band she started with childhood friends, Elizabeth M. Drummond wrote, recorded and produced her debut solo EP ‘Congratulations’ which was released in late 2022. Drummond re-emerges from the studio once again in 2024 with her sophomore EP ‘I’m Not Afraid Of Anything’, where she is rightfully front and centre of the process having written and produced the record with the meticulous care and attention we are learning to expect of the musical polymath. Her music is compelling, unpredictable and often humorous, providing an intriguing reflection of Drummond’s own life and insight into her perspective on the world around her. ‘I’m Not Afraid Of Anything’ is released in Autumn 2024 via Young Poet.
