Luke De-Sciscio and the cosmic miracles of "Only A Woman Knows" from the album "THEO"

"Only a woman knows / The weight of a life / What it’s like to be fed on / A harbour for the storm..."

The fevered bliss of "Only A Woman Knows" by folk indie juggernaut / cosmic poet Luke De-Sciscio floats around and cuts right through you like a fierce creek cutting it's path through soil and rock. De-Sciscio who I have written about quite a bit over the last few years is himself a force of nature offering us 15 full length albums and in 2022 started his own record label FOLK BOY RECORDS quickly amassing an amazing array of artists. I think for De-Sciscio crafting music is just like breathing, a fluid ID stream of consciousness that encompasses whatever is on his mind or in his heart at the time. A couple of years ago he released the album "The Banquet", a broad artrock meets psychedelic folk vision. In my extensive review I said:

[His latest manifestation, a 9 track album entitled "The Banquet", at first glimpse, seems to draw from the birthplace of classical music, ie 15th century music, the Renaissance period but Luke takes such impressions and twists them on their head. Within the album there are too many cross-generational genre blending moments to mention in one breath. It is as if these styles and, more importantly, these historical artistic cues were put in a magical petri dish to organically develop into another thing, something that lies somewhere between an opera and a theatrical stage play. A sound that, across the breadth and scope of an album, gleefully shape-shifts in cinematic ways. Luke is that auteur here with the core of each song written, recorded and produced by his hand but he smartly takes a wholistic approach by bringing in collaborators from all over the world broadening the sound in big ways.]

"Only A Woman Knows", in stark contrast, is De-Sciscio stripped down to his bread and butter soulful pairing of voice and guitar. Maybe, this is him at his most mesmerizing because the marriage of his percolating guitar picking style and soaring vocal lilt is enough to turn your head and listen, each and every time. I am always marveled at artists who can create a poetic musical space so minimally and the way De-Sciscio does this, you hear other orchestrations in the ether, his guitar playing especially conjures up more than just guitar.

From his latest super personal album "THEO" seeded from the birth of his first child, "Only A Woman Knows", lyrically and sonically is (to me) as much a feminist manifesto as it is a sort of spiritual diorama of life as a contextual point of pain / miracle / journey / actualization all rolled up in a moving poem / song.

"Only a woman knows
The weight of a life
What it’s like to be fed on
A harbour for the storm
Where the miraculous thunder booms
It’s life inside
Only a woman knows
Only a woman knows"

LINER NOTES:

"THEO" (the new album) -

In 2024, inspired by the birth of his daughter, Luke De-Sciscio once again felt the impulsive inspiration that drives him to write so passionately.

11 songs recorded in opportunistic sessions over the course of the first 6 weeks of his daughter's life, "Theo" is the sound of a young man discovering his fatherhood...

An expose on the fears and insurmountable love that one feels suddenly faced with the vastness of new life.

Steeped in rich and insightful poetry that dares to be fearless in its pursuit of truth. Be it the appalachian dexterity of his guitar playing or the divinely tethered conviction of his voice.

With "Theo" Luke De-Sciscio offers an uncompromising vision, spun almost entirely of first takes, recorded live (with only a single over-dub).]

I have yet to delve into "THEO" as life for me, lately, feels like desperate rushes to exhaustion but I plan on dipping in. I am once again pretty blown away by Luke De-Sciscio's passion and energy. Congratulations Luke to you and your lovely family and all their journeys to come.

UK folk-singer Luke De-Sciscio found his song-writing voice the old fashioned way; by writing, and mostly not releasing, dozens upon dozens of original songs, a journey that began on a boat with no electricity or heat.

Since those early days Luke De-Sciscio has gone onto record a catalogue of work which is unified, always, by one unremitting characteristic: the ceaseless and at times devastating search for truth.

His is a spirit that favours expression over perfection, fearlessness over convention and authenticity over marketing. And that candid approach has garnered him a burgeoning and loyal fanbase who, drawn by his unique voice, insightful lyricism and devotion to music, have enjoyed 15 full length albums over the course of his short career.

Recording often times into a single microphone in an effort to capture the very first rendition of every song, Luke has found a recording style outside the norm, that allows him to release sometimes as many as 4 albums in a single year.

Of those records, there are those which are most notable and those which served to move a feeling aside but of Luke De-Sciscio there can be no denying; when he is in the pocket, the World stops to listen.
