"you and I / are one in the same / I got my video games / ruined up / on all my mistakes / and now we're digital slaves..."
The alt pop / post punk caveat of "No Pleasure" by Cult Caves, the solo project of Salt Lake City, Utah's Tyson Henrie and sometimes collaborators, is gleefully stuck in my noggin. A wonderful bouncy angst party full of vintage tubular keys, tom tom beats, swaying acousting progs, pushing bass lines and Tyson's wailing vox that sometimes slide up in evocative falsettos has power pop prowess and sort of 90's post punk atmospheres too.
The sense here (to me) is the chase, the race to follow our own respective journeys through life whether chasing degrees, that corner office, or that festival stage but still feeling bound, still not feeling fulfilled. At least that is my take. I love counter positioned songs, songs that sound happy but might be melancholy or songs that sound gothically dark but might be happy. This is the former and so thoroughly relatable.
I am digging the way the vox are presented, sort of buried in the pocket of sounds but still easy to decipher, love the wash on the refrain "Hey, hey No pleasure, no pleasure for you" and couldn't help but think about the Seinfeld soup Nazi, "No Soup FOR YOU!". I am also loving the musical breaks, for some reason and I flashed on 80's artists like Haircut 100, Aztec Camera, 90's artists like Spoon, Modest Mouse. Not saying that Cult Caves sounds like any of these bands but feel some connection psychically, artistically or otherwise. As all American Pancake readers know, my mind sometimes works in mysterious ways.
Great stuff Tyson.
Be well good people and always do the right thing.
