"He said I'm sorry about my over active / Satisfaction seeking little heart / I know I gotta cool it / Down down down..."
While listening to the insect laden parasitic love song "Tick", by Virginia artist / producer Caleb L’Etoile and featuring the wonderful Jessy Leigh, I (for whatever) reason imagined a mid 70's Sonny and Cher type variety TV show (via cathode ray boxes) with Caleb and Jessy trading verses back and forth while glittery curtains cascade down in the background. I am adoring the bending synths, Caleb's kind of beach goth vocal predilections and Jessy's warm vocal countenance that winks at you as the sonics creak and crush like an undulating house with old pipes. The soundscape is dazzling, with sonics that drone, that all of the sudden rush but then don't against a stoic but cool beat.
The lyrics are a trip:
"He said I'm sorry about my over active
Satisfaction seeking little heart
I know I gotta cool it
Down down down
And sorry you can't shake me
But you got the stuff that makes tick
She said you're cool like melting ice caps
You're a rocket pop all over my hand
Let the syrup trickle down down down
You're such a mess but
You got the stuff that stains my stick"
Satisfaction seeking little heart
I know I gotta cool it
Down down down
And sorry you can't shake me
But you got the stuff that makes tick
She said you're cool like melting ice caps
You're a rocket pop all over my hand
Let the syrup trickle down down down
You're such a mess but
You got the stuff that stains my stick"
and the co-dependent chorus:
"I'm gonna stick on you like a tick and get big
Crawl on up your leg and make you sick
My love is parasitic honey better watch out for it
I'm gonna grow on you like a spot on your skin
I can be your favorite blemish like a shark and its fin
My love's a carnivore and babe you're smoking in that pit"
Crawl on up your leg and make you sick
My love is parasitic honey better watch out for it
I'm gonna grow on you like a spot on your skin
I can be your favorite blemish like a shark and its fin
My love's a carnivore and babe you're smoking in that pit"
Such a cool track, fun and curious, dreamy and nightmarish as a metaphor or as in some actual body horror, right?? Or is it just me?
LINER NOTES:
[On 10/16 I'm releasing a collection of songs inspired by the Halloween season, called I'm Always Haunted. Tick is the lead single and features myself and Jessy Leigh trading verses on a synthy little pop song that uses the central image of being a tick as a metaphor for love. If you do enjoy the song, please consider linking to the EP as well as it features 3 singles and covers of songs by the Ramones and Misfits all dropping at the same time to meet the holiday deadline.]
I apologize to Caleb L'Etoile for featuring "Tick" well beyond the Halloween season but check out the EP at the link here : https://calebletoile.bandcamp.com/album/im-always-haunted

Caleb L’Etoile is an artist/producer from Virginia who paints vivid portraits of life's rawest moments through cathartic, dance-fueled anthems that sit somewhere between the edges of pop, indie rock, and electronica. His clever, poignant lyrics and evocative vocals are the heart of each song, unraveling and reflecting our shared human experience with wit, familiarity and revelatory moments of heartbreak and intrigue. He is 5’9”, thinks about dogs way too much, and probably just said ‘fuck’.
