"I know it’s difficult to / put food on a table / Father showed me how / And if I could just clean up / I could be like him / Yeah, I could pay my rent..."
The power punching interstellar sonic screams of "Grow Up" by Jack Manley, the eponymous solo project of Kingston, New York based singer songwriter (Cosmonaut, The Jennifer Shop, Spires), hits me like 90's alt-rock / post rock / post grunge affairs and (to me) the song emotionally floats somewhere between Radiohead and Nirvana, or, in the least I could see in my vivid imagination Cobain strumming the acoustic guitar and Jonny Greenwood fanning out the screaming lead guitar hooks. Manley's vocal countenance feels artfully aloof, melancholy and thoughtful with the right about of throaty grit in the undertones.
Existing on Manley's EP "Unmeasurable Terms" that "chronicles his journey towards sobriety", the seeds of "Grow Up" are full of tears and gut punches as the LINER NOTES share:
[Recorded live in a single take at Utopia Studios in Woodstock, NY, 'Grow Up' is a powerful alt-rock single by Jack Manley, set to be released on October 18th. The song was inspired by the recent death of his father, an Irish immigrant who faced hardship and poverty while trying to build a new life in America. Despite his father's efforts, Jack ultimately left that life behind to tour in the indie rock scene, a journey reflected in the song’s raw emotion, and one sadly ending in Jack's decent heavy drug use. The official music video for "Grow Up" will be released on October 18th. Filmed in a single take, the video features Jack Manley sitting on the floor of his home in pajamas, holding a retro camcorder and recording himself in front of a three-way mirror. The visual and audio elements create a powerful statement as he repeatedly asks himself—and, in a way, his father—"Who are you?" He continues with the poignant line, "If I could just clean up. I want to be like them. Yeah, I could pay the rent."]
