"I've been dormant / An icicle case / I've been fallow / Ground no one excavates..."
The deeply felt confessional nature, artful bloodletting of "Cocoon" by alt rock / indie singer songwriter Kat Mackenzie feels raw and layered with multiple sonic patinas. Mackenzie possesses a voice that manifests in a kind of ID howl, artfully feral and real, sort of bohemian punk, sort of baroque rock, sort of gothic folk and post punk all at once. This makes for an atmosphere that feels as sinewy hard as it does whispery witchy, leather and lace as they say, sharp but ethereal. Mackenzie's lyrics (as poetry) can be interpreted in many ways but the fact that "Cocoon" is revealed to be about " pandemic isolation and relationship endings" (in LINER NOTES) makes sense and feels even more relatable.
"I've been dormant
An icicle case
I've been fallow
Ground no one excavates
And I don't plan on leaving
Anytime soon
You don't need to love me
I'm working on loving myself
You don't need to care about me
I'm working on caring about myself
I've been sluggish'
An icicle case
I've been fallow
Ground no one excavates
And I don't plan on leaving
Anytime soon
You don't need to love me
I'm working on loving myself
You don't need to care about me
I'm working on caring about myself
I've been sluggish'
In a couches embrace
Scared to let anyone in
Lest I meet my fate
And I don't plan on leaving
Anytime soon"
Scared to let anyone in
Lest I meet my fate
And I don't plan on leaving
Anytime soon"
"Cocoon" feels so potent and (to me) brings to mind artists like Patti Smith, like Chelsea Wolfe, like PJ Harvey, Sharon Van Etten. This track is the title track from Kat MacKenzie's very first EP. See LINER NOTES below to learn more (bracketed).
[Her first EP Cocoon symbolizes a period of isolation and introspection the artist faced following the pandemic. As a cocoon protects during metamorphosis, this phase allowed Kat to reflect and grow creatively. These songs are personal and relatable, but at the same time, there is a catchy and timeless quality to this sound, which taps into the alternative rock scene for inspiration. Songs on the EP are Cocoon, MSG, Hair on Fire, and Gotta Have a Little Faith.
Kat worked closely with Frank Palangi of Palangi Studios, where the songs transformed (staying true to the meaning of the album title) with multiple layers and dynamic elements that enhance the production without detracting from Kat's palpable songwriting instincts. Their friendship/working relationship became part of the creative fire behind this EP as well. For more info: https://www.katmackenziemusic.com]
"I’m cocooned
Oh Oh Oh OhI kind of hate myself
(Aw, Aw)
My fears are wild demons
(Aw, Aw)
And when I let them out
Oh baby its rough
I kind of hate myself
(Aw, Aw)
The way I stay closed up
(Aw, Aw)
When I want to give you
(Aw, Aw)
My fears are wild demons
(Aw, Aw)
And when I let them out
Oh baby its rough
I kind of hate myself
(Aw, Aw)
The way I stay closed up
(Aw, Aw)
When I want to give you
my sweet love..."

Kat Mackenzie is an alternative rock/indie music songwriter whose music is marked by lyrical depth and emotional resonance. She draws upon personal experiences and observations to create songs that feel both intimate and universal. With each note, she invites listeners into her world, encouraging them to explore their own feelings and memories. Kat finds "strength" in the rawness that comes from admitting that sometimes life is sad, intense and profound. She wants her music to move her listeners, to inspire, to make you dance and dream.
