"when it all falls down / who will be there?"
The memory shrouded, punchy indie swings of "Pocket", the second single from Melbourne duo, Beach Vultures, floods over me like a cold morning fog. The track feels melancholy with shards of angst and a undercurrent of regret even and longing, at least to me. We all hear songs differently depending on our relationship to music, how deep it is and how wide it is. To me, the rather stripped down but tightly wound sound, with kind of tubular sonics and a pretty much live sound hits me like post grunge 90's touched by emo and post hardcore, maybe even seeded by old school new wave and proto punk inspired indie (think Television and Pavement). Then again, I feel other seeds born out of the revisionist garage rock and punk of the 2000's.
In the end, those kinds of things are less important than the emotional cues and contexts here. "Pocket" feels like youth on the cusp of adulthood when the world starts to feel more imposing and fucked up if not for those human connections you hold onto with levels of hopeful smiles but desperate tears too. We have all been there and the moody emotionalism here so nicely manifested in Matt's and Alan's wistful songwriting and well balanced approach to not over producing is palpable. The balance of dreaminess and rich, explosive musical breaks works so effortlessly. "Pocket" will, most definitely, stick in your head.
