"sometimes I feel like I'm just a hot air balloon / lifted up by the things that I want out of life / like what?"
The ID art rock confessional of "Shoulder Song" by Brooklyn's singer-songwriter, creative, artist, provocateur Victor Jones, is audacious, is tender, ropes you into your own desires and insanities drenched in blood and tears. The song conceptually like street punk, like emo on high feels, in some ways, very kind of rock art operatic, maybe a cross between Jeff Rosenstock and Los Campesinos! There are sounds that feel like a throwback to times before mostly but done up in such a in your face way as to feel like the tumultuous times we are living in. The feeling as expressed by Jone's bold bloodletting can feel as jubilant as youth itself and like a nervous breakdown too.
As a music writer who deals in raw feelings over perfectly planned blogger prose, while listening, I wrote this one line:
"Victor Jones and the open velvet ropes, the dream theatrical whips and chains of "Shoulder Song" as 1950's bruises, 60's kisses, 90's resurrections in technicolour."
AND while I cannot possibly tell you what that means, I can tell you that this is what the "Shoulder Song" feels like (to me). As someone who used to play on stages in a band performing mostly songs I wrote, the hardest thing in the world is being your bold self on stage, letting the real you step forward in artful ways. I was too self conscious to do that and, most certainly, that is why I sucked and felt like a fraud. I have the inherent feeling that Victor Jones does not feel like a fraud.
