"you are what you are / because of what I really want / you know how to ground me / because of what I really want..."
The tender 70's pop sheen and modern bedroom indie intimacies of "My Room", by Los Angeles-based indie rock artist Alex Bloom, come together in wonderful ways, a sonic tapestry of electronica and warm vocal falsettos. The official video leans into the nostalgia of vintage Nintendo 64 video games and maybe the sensation of simpler times back then. Remember when we all were not glued to our smartphones, these little anxiety makers that make life better but also bombards us with hyper addictive data 24 hours a day, thus numbing us to true personal contact.
Eschewing pop or indie rock formulas, Bloom keeps "My Room" full of comfort and abstractions. The song shape shifts from jazzy alt pop leans to to a narrative sans singing, ultimately stripping away the groove to become something else like a dramatically laden dream full of balladic piano and surreal ambience.
So much to fall into, something filmic and nostalgic. A foreshadowing of Bloom's upcoming album "Across the Country" dropping on September 12th, 2025.
LINER NOTES (excerpted and bracketed):
[Los Angeles-based indie rock artist Alex Bloom announced his album Across the Country, out 9/12. Bloom’s longest and most involved project – clocking in at 15 songs and performed and recorded nearly entirely on his own – acts as an autobiography. It explores a time in Bloom's life full of changes: from moving across the country and back, falling in love, risking a long term relationship, and more. It's about the big moments, the in-between moments, and all the emotions that come along as a result.]
[The nostalgic lead single "My Room" is a peaceful track that weaves mid-tempo synths with syncopated drums as Bloom's tender falsetto and heartfelt lyrics evoke a sense of warmth and sanctuary: an ode to the quiet comfort of his own space.]

Alex Bloom has been writing songs since he was 15, inspired by the autobiographical style of John Lennon’s songwriting. From early on, his music became a way of capturing snapshots of his life – of feelings, moments, and places in time. “I think music is capable of holding so much of that information without it ever being explicitly communicated,” he says. While in college in 2014, Bloom began recording demos, experimenting with production techniques and collaborating with friends who were engineers and producers. As his skills grew, so did the quality of his work, resulting in a steadily evolving catalog of introspective, emotionally resonant songs. He eventually released his debut album Blue Room in 2017, followed by the sophomore project Chaos / Control in 2019 and the EP Memory Card A in 2020.
Now, with his third studio album Across the Country, Bloom chronicles a deeply transformative moment in his life amidst his move from his hometown in Los Angeles to New York City. During this time, he experienced a whirlwind of life changes. Between the chaos of relocation, falling in love, and personal upheaval, Bloom found himself documenting the arc of his experiences through song. “When I looked back a few years later I found that without planning it, these songs told a very clear story of my life, and a story that I felt was maybe relatable and worth sharing,” he says.
The album is the culmination of everything Bloom has put into his music so far – the life experiences accrued, the artistic talent honed, the wealth of musical knowledge gained – and the result is a sweeping statement that’s equal parts diaristic and universally applicable to anyone who’s ever had a dream in their heart while gazing towards the horizon. Bloom’s flavor of chamber-pop recalls multiple eras of rock and indie all at once – the ornate and lush constructions that came out of Brooklyn in the 2000s, the studio wizardry that marked classic 1970s pop and rock music, ‘90s alternative’s heart-on-sleeve lyrical directness – and it all coalesces into a sound and voice that’s distinctly his own, just as the journey that brought him to this point remains.
Determined to take full creative control, Alex Bloom self-produced Across the Country, performing and recording as much as possible on his own. He credits longtime friends and collaborators Brendan McCusker — who played drums on every track except one — and Alex Pachino, who mixed the album and helped bring its sonic vision to life. “The song always comes first when producing my music,” Bloom says, “so arrangement and production are dictated primarily by what feelings and atmosphere I want a song to evoke.” The record is a deeply felt gesture suggesting that, whatever comes next, Bloom will capture it just as vividly.
