"shapes and sounds swallow deep"
Luna Maria is a cagey spartan indie rock track from Barry Wilson. Wilson is a composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist from Cork, Ireland who is usually composing and arranging for the bigger than life large ensemble project aka Barry Wilson Music so the fact that Luna Maria is merely three players is different for the talented artist. Even though Luna Maria feels more like experimental post rock, it doesn't shed it's orchestral atmosphere, it just tones it down a bit. Barry steeps the less askew moments in an almost 60's chamber pop kind of motif and, in fact, the more pop aspects (and they are few here) did make me think of some of the shy art glimmer of Brian Wilson (circa 1966 Smile) but, for the most part, Barry creates a vast sort of industrial meets post rock affair with injections of trap drums and psyche jazz flirtations. Kudos to the vocal sound and melodies here. Barry, love your more cinematic orchestrations (as usual) but want more of THIS too. Bravo, my friend.
On the back of his debut album Portrait released in September 2019, Irish artist Barry Wilson releases his new song Lunar Maria, complete with lyric video; written & recorded over the last few weeks of self-isolation amidst the pandemic. The song centres around the peculiar tendency for humans to see patterns where there are none. Notable inspiration for the piece comes from the "Man in the Moon" - the belief that various images can be seen in the moon as a result of the light and dark areas visible to the human eye. The dark areas are known as the lunar maria. - press notes

Below are reviews for his previous release Persuasions to Enjoy.
Nialler9 - 'Addressing a significant other, there’s a stellar standard of lyricism throughout the track. With plenty of lines heaping depth and character into the already charismatic tune.'
American Pancake - 'The track is so incredibly varied and immersive. Amazing stuff.'
A & R Factory - 'It’s a little awkward, and that’s not even a criticism, there are teams of urban artists trying to stamp down their slightly nerdy style with Hip Hop, but no one does it quite as inventively as Barry Wilson.'
