"George can’t CGI my life, right?"
Dylan Gilbert's sound and mind bending piece of cinematic art rock / art punk, Moving Forward, has lyrics that are most curious, sold to us via Gilbert's pitch shifted vocals. They flow like a midnight movie, like something much odder than what a character in a David Lynch film may stoically utter:
Slack-jawed the palm reader gawks / A spirit hovers over / The annoyed apparition blurts: Haven’t you learned your lesson yet? / Don’t chain yourself to a thought when you can think of more / The colors stirred too much will turn into mud / Moving forward is important
And in that altered voice it is as if Gilbert is not himself but a mere apparition for his song which has truths buried between the askew poetry, the easiest reveal being quite possibly the crux of this weird, yet totally captivating piece of art and that is that "Moving forward is important". It is in the end (and in the beginning) the most important thing about life that seems even more resonant during these cold, sometimes terrifying times. WE are afterall like sharks, if we don't move, we die.
Gilbert is a songwriter, producer and performer from Charlotte, North Carolina, and is a founding member of genre-bending punk band Hectorina. A band whose songs and projects I have shared multiple times. They like Gilbert's solo project here have a divergent side to their sound and I love that.
In 2020, he will release his 10th solo album, "I’ll Be the Lakebed", a 10 song cycle co-produced with Justin Aswell that explores themes of spirituality and technology in 21st century America through avant-garde pop, ambient soundscapes and DIY performance art. - press notes.
