"violence... I see violence"
Denmark's alternative I Am Bones has just dropped Syphon from the upcoming EP "Lobster Vibes" set to release on June 5th, 2020 on Crunchy Frog. The ostensibly four piece band was centered around singer-songwriter Johannes Gammelby and ran hot and heavy from their inception (2003) to 2008. As rigors of the road took it's toll, the band ended.
Gammelby went on to form The Malpractice but in 2018 I Am Bones resurfaced and released the EP "Oaf"and in 2019 their single Restorer. I Am Bones while varying styles over the years has always had a heavy, grunge core sound and Syphon is no exception. Gammelby can still scream a bloody murderous wail. Just listen to his throat clearing at the beginning of Syphon before a few guitar chords signal, the absolute thunderous assault of hellish heavy guitars and Gammelby's grunge soaked gravel vocals. What sets I Am Bones apart from some of the Seattle Grunge is their flip on a dime aesthetic from dense heaviness to pretty sounds but they pull it off beautifully here. Even Gammelby switches from gutteral screams to dreamy falsettos. The song flips from Thor's Hammer to fields of poppies and fairies, from aggro to flights of psychedelia. Be assured that those pretty (but potent) bursts are brief... don't worry, all Hell does break loose again.
I Am Bones are Johannes Gammelby (Guitar, vocals), Filip Granlie (Guitar), Christian Winther (Bass) and Jeppe Lindgren (Drums).

10 years of silence indicated that I Am Bones were living up their name, existing only in memory. frontman Johannes Gammelby’s attention elsewhere with The Malpractice. The 2018 EP Oaf marked the band’s exhumation, 2019’s single Restorer and a handful of live shows suggested I Am Bones were fully re-animated, and the upcoming EP Lobster Vibes seals the deal: I Am Bones are alive and kicking.
Thematically, the music, lyrics, artwork and title all share a common thread - a struggle against claustrophobia in a social, physical, psychological and creative sense. Something at the heart of all of it feels cornered and is charged with a desperation - a constant looking for a way out, and different routes -- all of them hard, all of them catchy -- are explored throughout.
Lobsters don’t die of old age. They’re either killed or grow until, unable to shed their shell, they’re crushed against it. It doesn’t get more claustrophobic than that.
Lobster Vibes is out on Crunchy Frog on Friday 5 June 2020.
