"I want to belong somewhere even if I'm seen as desperate"
Los Angeles based Last Train to Tokyo, on their latest single "god on headphones", express feelings of longing, or maybe being disconnected to one's art and one life. The guitar lines, courtesy of Aki Iwata provide a constant tapestry of sounds, pearly melodies and patterns floating while the drums by Wes Hayashi, highlight on and off the guitar's path with a blend of trip hop affections and jazz rock flourishes. Bassist and Vocalist, Tat Iwata anchors the disparate parts and reigns them in while passionately asking questions and opening lyrical wounds. Of the song he shares:
"In today’s fast paced society, we make many life choices for our education and our careers, but not everyone ends up in a place they want to be. I heard a saying that goes something like, “most men lead lives of quiet desperation and die with their song still inside them,” which resonated with me. I noticed the distress I was holding in and the lies I was telling myself. I felt terrible about not having meaning in my life and fearful of where I would be one day continuing down my current path. This song is about that feeling of quiet desperation and the longing to be somewhere where one can truly feel that they belong."
"god on headphones" feels to me like a fusion of musical emotions born out of improvisational curing of neo soul, jazz and post rock tones with pain and the stuff of life, questions about why we are here floating to the top. After the third act, an extended musical breakdown that is a whirlwind of their fusion, an extended coda, guitar leads creating a visceral climax of emotions amid a combative lushness, you feel artfully spent.
