Flaw Lust: dark synth pop / dance punk / and disco thumps: "Pine"

"do it again, I don't want to finish..."

Listening to the bump and grind of Flaw Lust's track "Pine" and I am reminded of the power of the thump. I commented to someone recently about my current disdain for the "thump beat" but this morning I must take back what I say. It absolutely works here and obviously, the sort of disco pound does work because this song is so much more than the thump. A whole lot more. For one thing, the narrative, the lyrics introduced by what feels like horror pop synths and a nostalgic electro funk pop beat and synth bass line are evocative and bathed in time honored relationship junk in (maybe) dark ways. It is like a disco or gutter punk flavor was stirred in with a dark 60's Gothic Italian Horror flick, "enter my head, cut all the wires, do it again, set me on fire, spin through my head, cut all the wires, do it again, set me on fire" (metaphors not withstanding).

Cara Potiker does push disco-fied melodies throughout which makes this track beautifully odd, nostalgic, and haunting. The vision of goth kids wearing black fingernail polish dancing beneath a glitter ball keeps persisting in my head.

spin through the web cut all the linens, do it again I don't want to finish...

Kiss the sun goodbye... Kiss the moon goodbye

"Pine" cuts a deep haze, a thick atmosphere, it feels strangely punk (electro and proto), it feels like Soul Train and most of all, it makes you want to get up and shake your hips with a serious face.
