"I think I'd love to own a motorbike, two wheels and leather gloves sounds like something I might like..."
Newmarket, Ontario, Canada indie rock band Tokyo Police Club have been growing their legions of devoted fans since 2005 and have released a video for their fan fav "Top 5", a track that heretofore only existed on a Daytrotter Session recorded in 2010. Of the video the band shared (on their Facebook):
[we wrote this song way back in the early days, but for whatever reason we never recorded or even demoed it. we played it at a daytrotter session, and people have been asking for a studio version ever since. and let it never be said that TPC doesn't give the people what they want! the definitive studio recording of Top 5 is available now wherever you stream or buy music!
the video is a selection of random shots of gear i apparently took while filming the Champ sessions. all the "exciting" footage got used in the Hundred Dollar Day video, but i've always been partial to studio gear an i wanted to give it a moment to shine. and here it is!]
Of the redo, guitarist and keyboardist Graham Wright shares: “Ever since we did it on Daytrotter way back when, people have been asking for an official release, but even though it’s been floating around since before ‘Elephant Shell’ we never recorded it properly!
For a long time, we assumed that ship had sailed – our style and approach had evolved, and it can feel surprisingly hard to convincingly recapture an old vibe! But we found ourselves with some studio time recently, and we decided to try the novel approach of ‘playing the song like we wrote it.’ Lo and behold, there it was! It had been waiting for us the whole time, and we thank it for its patience. It ended up being the best of both worlds – our old 2010s was still there, preserved in amber, and we got to use all the new tricks we’ve learned since then too. 10 years of Tokyo Police Club in one bite sized, 3-minute package!”
This renewed "Top 5" is so amazing and sounds unbelievably fresh.
