"that tone of voice is abusing you..."
Voodoo Bloo is a New Zealand based alt rock band centered around the songs and deep croon / growl of Rory McDonald. Listening to "SKIN", a blistering piece of music that (to me) has a certain amount of rock classicalism in it's bones but also feels progressive and artful with a tinge of Goth rock darkened dreaminess around the edges. The commanding ever moving bass and side shifting drums are immersed in an almost Church like grandeur awash in ambient drones. A decidedly massive framework for Rory's big vocal aesthetic that belies his young age as he sputters out subversive metaphors. The song is informed by the tumultuous feelings of youth:
In the end, "SKIN" feels at once tattered and torn but in some sense celebratory. The jagged musical break seems to highlight the confusion but ultimately you feel empowerment pushing through sonic adversity.
Voodoo Bloo is Rory McDonald (Singer / Guitar), Daniel Maslen (Guitar), Oli Cass (Bass) and Jackson Kidd (Drums). The band is in the studio recording their sophomore album "The Blessed Ghost".

Voodoo Bloo are an energetic young alternative rock band influenced by artists such as Radiohead and Arctic Monkeys.
Rory McDonald (Singer / Guitar) – Rory brings a rich soothing vocal line to most songs, although the odd growl and shout is thrown in to surprise you. Rory is the main songwriter of the band, and the songs are maturing every week. As well as singing Rory plays guitar after handing over his bass to Oli.
Daniel Maslen (Guitar) - Daniel really adds several layers of weird noises missing from the first album created from a multitude of pedals. His on-stage presence is mesmerising to watch, although with long flowing locks of hair we still haven’t managed to get a good look at his face.
Oli Cass (Bass) – Oli is the newest member of the band and has taken over bass playing duties from Rory. Oli is also Voodoo Bloo’s video director, part time photographer and adds a creative flare to the band.
Jackson Kidd (Drums) - Jackson’s drumming is fast and furious but with precision that really adds energy to all of VB’s tracks. Complex fills, tempo variations and time signature changes make Jackson one of the best drummers we have ever seen. And while doing all of this he sings backing vocals, wow!
Their last album "Jacobus" featured 3 singles that were well received around the globe, especially in Australia, UK and USA.
Their second UK single ‘MMA’ was released on 14th May via PlasticGroove Records. The single is the follow up to their critically acclaimed debut ‘Her Name Was Human’ released in February. Described as “a fiery ball of big riffs, juicy drum beats and snappy vocals with deep meaning leave you in awe” INDIE CENTRAL MUSIC , “A True Alt Rock Rollercoaster” SUBBA CULTCHA and “a real punk energy vibe” THE MOSHVILLE TIMES.
They supported "Racing" at San Fran in Wellington Aug 21 and are due to support Australian band "You Am I" in October 21. They are currently recording their 2nd album due Q1 of 2022, the first single scheduled to be released in November 2021. This will be followed by an NZ tour, and hopefully overseas if Covid allows.
