Chic Chameleon and the questions and melancholy love of "Dreaming of Heaven"

 

"Sitting back / You're alone / Once again / Questioning nothing..."

The somber, floating sounds of "Dreaming of Heaven" by Alberta, Canada based Chic Chameleon, and based around the songwriting of multi-instrumentalist Patrick Froese, is perfectly understated and quietly beautiful. I don't care who you are, a true believer or a true non believer, you have at some time in your life thought about the other, the after life and usually, unfortunately, it is when the crushing sadness of losing someone wraps around you, holds on to you tight, hugs you around the shoulders. As synths ascend and resolve and bass lines wind around a steady easy beat while pearly slightly bending guitar notes ride the other sounds, Froese's voice gently serenades us within the the pretty haze. The touches of psychedelia and lounge pop and even 70's pop made me think of an amalgam of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Mac DeMarco and Harry Nilsson.

"Dreaming of Heaven" is from Chic Chameleon's EP "Doomed" and Froese shares:

"Over 2020, I set up my drum set and guitar amp in my bedroom and started recording my debut single. The song focuses on some pretty sad subjects and I wanted the main guitar riff to evoke a sense of melancholy in the listener right away. My aunt was really sick and while in the hospital, she said that she kept dreaming that she was up in heaven. She wanted the pain to be over and to be at peace. This was one of my main inspirations for the lyrics- using a perspective of someone who is already in heaven looking down at earth. The overlying theme of the EP is generally pretty sad and focuses on existential thoughts about life and death."
