"everyone wants a piece but no one knows why..."
There is a sense of hypnosis on the suspicious sonic cajole of "Wolves" by Norwich synth pop duo Prawns (South African singer-songwriter, Cara Knox, and British composer/multi-instrumentalist, Greg Madge). The song begins right away with no musical intro- it is like stepping right into that dark club and instantly having to move, to dance because the bodies pushing against you are making do so. This fall into the flow extends to the lyrics too given to us by Knox's beautifully aloof vocal aesthetic. Her melodies push her emotional tensions in gentle ways but not too gentle, she feels both like the observer while not becoming a zombie, a lemming as she sings,
"feed yourself on the night, everybody wants a piece or nobody knows why but the flashing lights call, throw yourselves to the wolves, everybody wants a reason for their bodies to move against their own world..."
There is this real understated sense of danger, of losing yourself, of feeling you have to engage in mass behavior (like being on tik tok, or having those shoes, or taking that virtuous stance) as well as being controlled and allowed to be a certain way as long as the wolves around us allow us to be not ourselves. Am I reading to much into this darkly drawn magnetic piece of music, maybe... but I doubt it.
I am digging the open spaces in the sound, it creates a wondrous place to think. I love the sound of the synths, the almost casual robotic beat and Knox's vocal countenance that strays into dissonance now and then.
Knox and Madge are no slackers, between them (from press notes) [they have toured Europe, worked on projects with the Tate gallery and scored an Oscar winning film. The duo's brand new project, ‘Prawns’, brings jazzy elements and complex chords to analog synths and crunchy beats. A seductive blend of chill and intense. Their debut EP, ‘Cocktail’, dropped on 10th March along with a flurry of tour dates and radio appearances.]
