"I want to be whatever I'm not, maybe a broker or a traffic cop, yeah it doesn't matter..."
Let's not mince words. "Whatever I'm Not" by California's BEATIFIC is a song that dazzles me in all sorts of ways. The overall emotional impression, charm, whimsy saturated in a gentle self awareness of one's own melancholia, an even sometimes depressive grip on life and it's meaning, it's brevity speaks to me. At the same time I would never want to speak for the author of this fucking amazing track so everything I am expressing is definitely my projections. The musical and vocal thrust that gives nods to 70's conscious pop, to John Lennon, to Harry Nilsson and to more contemporary artists like Andy Shauf, Elliot Smith not only speaks to me but hugs me until tears stream down my face.
Within the narrative of "Whatever I'm Not" might be the notion that maybe if we are something else that we will feel better, that life will blossom, that we will feel better. This existential life preserver tossed might save some of us but not all. Sometimes the thing that haunts us, that give us stomach aches at night cannot be remedied by anything on the outside and that truth that BEATIFIC plays with so wonderfully, so beautifully creates sparks in my brain. I love this song from top to bottom, unconditionally. Love the drums (a lot), the lyrics, the vocal countenance, the orchestrations of sound that that plaintiff piano. But enough about me, ha.
BEATIFIC shares:
["Whatever I’m Not" hearkens to the timeless human experience of how to tease out a gold nugget from the rocks, dirt, and mud. Most of us wake up, go to work, come home, eat a meal, go to sleep, re-enact the same sequence the next day. But how do we unearth a jewel of magic from the drudgery of the day-to-day? If we try too hard, we fail. But we must keep it always in mind, or life will pass us by before we know quite how it happened.
