Canada's Notre Noise and the feargach punk-esque carnival descent of "The Apostle Paul" features beautiful maniacal vox, screaming guitar with artful feedback, a devilish oompah band waltz, melodramatic piano smashing and more, all making for a kind of thrashing politico art rock opera on high. If this were a film it might be a mayhemic amalgam of Panos Cosmatos, David Lynch, Brandon Cronenberg and Daron Aronofsky after communally micro-dosing on shrooms.
The enigmatic, mysterious Notre Noise poke at a lot of bears here, mainly the trauma industry and the know it all grifters and gurus on left, right and middle (don't get me started on Jordan Peterson) and I long for the days when people of different persuasions had beers together, talked, fucked, whatever without being so judgmental, with leaning into our humanity first and foremost. And why do comics become life coaches when they no longer are funny?? Why are Churches not taxed. Questions for another day. May Joel Osteen burn in hell.
I do love the production here, the full fledged Official Video, the outrageous vocal aesthetic, the scorched earth artistry, the audacious subversions. For whatever reason, I thought a bit of Dresden Dolls, of Queens of the Stone Age, of Erotic Secrets of Pompeii, of Oingo Boingo, of Idles or maybe more to the point, aspects, slivers of all those artists.
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[The Apostle Paul is the first release of 2024 by Notre Noise. The song evolved from an unlikely marriage between an off-kilter circus waltz drum beat and a bassline in the style of 70's Jamaican dub. Stylistically, a good comparison might be Nick Cave's side project, Grinderman.
The track is supported by a music video with a cast of 15 actors, inspired partly by the infamous "I Take Responsibility" video that Hollywood celebrities made in the summer of 2020, Appalachian snake churches, and the Jonestown cult.]
