"if you need some kind of reminder / when your memory starts to fade / we can talk about the stories / we weren't supposed to tell..."
The lo-fi wash and wonder of "Second Wind" by Mystic Toad starts with booming clear skin tom tom sounds and then falls into beautifully urgent bass and guitar notes as a backdrop for hushed vox with a sort of ghostly bounce back, "if you need some kind of reminder / when your memory starts to fade / we can talk about the stories / we weren't supposed to tell...", as other sounds emerge, swelling up the production in illusory ways. The interconnectedness of the instrumentation while somber have a playfulness in how the puzzle piece connect. I absolutely love the vocal melodies, for me there are verse shapes, stair stepping poetry that while not the same, feel reflected in passages of the chorus in a lovely way.
" I don't wear it out / I don't want to hear about it / by now I know I can't win / the daylight is fading / but I'm just beginning / to get my second wind..."
The emotional tensions might reveal more fragilities, cracks in foundations (or maybe not). Maybe that story exists between Mystic Toad's intimate lyrical lines. In any case, I truly love the artful sounds and storytelling.
Be well. Be true. Be safe.
Be well. Be true. Be safe.
