"Black skies / Pouring weather / Assorted hats / Faux leather / An animal / Conforms whatever the sky does / I'm animal / I can’t control my innocence..."
The raw skinned knuckles alt rock pummel of "Waiting for the Sun", by PHWOAR, an indie alt rock two piece band from Birmingham, England - specifically Helena on drums / vocals and Paul on guitar / vocals, feels both darkly manifested but beautifully stirring (in hopeful ways) as well. The track feels constructed of post grunge power but I am feeling a kind of divinely commercial pop prowess too. Paul and Helena's vocals kill here, drawing you into the emotional mayhem. I, in fact, thought of attitudinal and sonic connections to outfits like The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Sleigh Bells, Blood Red Shoes.

I look forward to 'Flowers Through the Concrete' and I am kind of a sucker for boy / girl or girl / boy vocals. I find having different vocal countenances in a song almost always interesting. The different textures and emotional persuasions create tensions that feel perfectly relatable to me.
ABOUT THE SONG from PHWOAR:
[This is a song about resilience. It explores hope as a form of rebellion and learning to find strength in times of weakness. In the UK, January 20 (this song's release date) is known as Blue Monday, which is supposedly the most depressing day of the year (coincidentally in 2025, it is also the day of the US presidential inauguration). Blue Monday was concocted to sell you stuff, using people's mental health as an excuse to do so. This song is a reminder that mental health is not something to be made light of in order to sell holidays and stuff. It's also a reminder to ourselves and anybody going through difficult times that the lowest ebb is never a constant. There's always light after the darkness. Sometimes we're just forced into waiting for the sun.]
I did not know that Jan. 20th is called Blue Monday in the UK. I purposely did not watch Donald Trump ascension to a kind of utterly stupid, morally bankrupt fascist king. We here in the States are about to enter dark times. There will be an unprecedented amount of bad happening but we will somehow survive. Personally, it has been weird here in California with the Pacific Palisades and other areas on fire. It is as if something is in the air, that mother nature and human psychos have been affected by an entity spawned from hell elected to one of the highest positions in the world while Elon Musk pledges fealty by staging a Nazi salute on Global television.
