"some delusion... tease the tension"
Sleemo are a three piece alternative / punk outfit out of Norwich (UK) and when Pipe Bomb (the first single from their new EP "Mutation Of") played on my electronic desk, I screamed yes, yes... YES! Ok, not actually as my wife might of bopped me in the head with a hard bound book but I did scream inside. It might of been the sheer delight in hearing the extreme heaviness here but more than that it was the the sort of musical altercation that shook me up. The beginning staggered guitar line / progression feels quirky with all the half steppery and is quite brilliant. The A to the E-F then to the Bb feels jagged because of those half steps and then the C to B to Bb as a transition fortifies that divergent quality. It sets the song, from the very beginning, so far away from anything resembling pop and I love that. Throw Billy George Utting's wide eyed (snarky, wailing, padded room-esque) vocals plus feral big drums, huge bass lines and it all equates to heavenly heavy stuff, that feels original but also pays homage to sort of iconic punk D.N.A. I thought of bands like Gang Of Four and the Dirt Bombs smashed together.
Sleemo is Jacob Brooks (Drums), Jack Andrews (Bass/Vocals) and Billy George Utting (Vocals/Guitar).
