"it takes more courage to just walk away"
Brooklyn based indie folk duo Hearth have a way with words, and melodies and storytelling. The final track, Angel, from their debut, self-titled EP (that dropped on April 24th, 2020) is a three act indie folk play told through 3 manifestations of love, loss, pain and more that interweaves through all our lives really. Told through the characters of the gambler, the angel and the lover, the collaboration of ideas, poetry and melody are realized in such a rich way. Melanie Wiggins wrote the song reflecting on past relationships and the song was fully realized with Sara Horton singing the lead vocal.
Angel with it's narrative, it's amazing folk sway, commanding vocal character (and harmonies), rootsy production, and three part story telling structure is a beautiful sweeping folk set of dioramas with a cinematic sweep that belie the duo's youth. Helping them realize their vision was Joe Martinez (of Martinez & Guthrie) and Riverland Collective pulling in talented musicians from the local music scene.
