"LA dream, do you know what I mean?"
What do you do when your 2020 album comes out in the midst of Covid 19 and your plans are dashed? You make a subversively fun Covers album. Duderella is a L.A. punk rock duo who dispense bass heavy stoner pop manifestations of sound. Their 2020 full length "UTOPIA" dropped on 3/24/20, the first week of "stay at home" orders cancelling their album release shows, bursting their punk bubble. Daniel Reyes (vox, bass, drum machine) is the wide eyed provocateur churning big bass lines and spewing, crooning, savoring his words and Chris Magallon (drums, keys, drum machine) glues the mania together with his solid drums and keyboard work.
Their sheer feral stoner rock is evident on tracks like Supreme (made me think of a much more punk-ified Death from Above 1979), the mental breakdown of Dank Meme and the punk riot feel of Fuck Your Cool. Other tracks feel like soundtracks to sideways midnight movies like the lounge punk title track Utopia ("I wish I could bleach somethings that I think") or Pro Heretic that feels like a rabblerouser come on for a cult meeting or Tech Noir that ramps up tension and would work well in any dark movie that involves killer robots. Tracks like Paradise Mirror, steeped in a punk version of a sort of 60's psychedelia meets prog experimental sounds of today, the intensely psycho dreamy LA Dream and the Grind house affair called MDG that also blends 60's hard core rock shows Duderella's ability to coalesce a lot of textures that feel cross generational. Reyes can scream for sure but sometimes his deep internal weird croons feel Morrison like.Within "UTOPIA" in general, feel time travel car crash of bands like The Doors, The Cramps Thee Oh Sees, Modeselektor, and Michigan's power house MC-5.
But I digress...
Amid the pressure put on the breaks of UTOPIA. The boys have taken on some beloved covers of songs by no other than Britney Spears, Chet Baker, Warm Soda, Barbara Lewis and Poor Song by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The upcoming EP is entitled "Dream FM" (drop date yet unknown).
Drop into the world of Duderella first, in "UTOPIA" and then Poor Song if you dare but I warn you, things are going to get weird.

ALT-PUNK FROM LA
Los Angeles punk rock duo, Duderella bring an abrasive stoner-pop confection of sound. With Daniel Reyes on bass, screaming & crooning like the rejected offspring of Lux Interior & Glenn Danzig and Chris Magallon bashing the drums wit
"I have never—and probably never will again—heard something quite as tenacious, as gutsy, or as defiant as Duderella’s Daniel Reyes with a mic at his mouth. To state that I could very literally feel his spit on my face would be an understatement." -LA RECORD
