"hanging out in the milky way"
South African singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist Hugh Davison, on the track Southern Cross, has a lot on his mind and heart. Spilling out, maybe vomiting negativity in a cosmic way and as weird as that may sound, I know that we are what we eat. If that is the case, we are what we absorb from the media, from everywhere and the world is ingesting too much negative energy a lot of the time. Davison steps into all of this with a psychedelically rich blend of Fender Rhodes sounding keys (my fav) and chill, free form drums and rhythms. It is an overall trippy experience with highs and lows of sounds and emotions, push and pulls. The down beats and maybe the overall feel sort of push those late 60's / 70's psyche garden rock buttons.
OF the song, Davison shares:
"Southern Cross is like a kind of purge - so much negativity! But I feel like there’s a lot of negative shit going around and a lot of it is connected. It’s about altered states, privileged states, ‘United States’, addiction, capitalism, colonialism, extractive mentality - all the stuff I (we?) see on a daily basis in South Africa and now, thanks to the internet, the World - I feel like we as humans need to start asking ourselves some very serious questions… Perhaps agents and moments of chaos may even be necessary in order to bring about massive system change?"

My name is Hugh Davison. I make music to stay busy. I also make music for a living. Sometimes I make music to express a thought or an idea. Sometimes I just make music. I have been writing these songs (mainly on the guitar, but sometimes also on the keyboard - usually my trusty old Fender Rhodes emulation on Logic Pro) for some years now, questioning the nature of reality, while at the same time taking an active interest in the ideas of Magic (with a capital M), Spirituality (with a capital S),politics, purpose, morality and Chaos (with a capital C).
