"why can't I act right?"
I am not saying that Paul Nedorestek (vocals, guitar, keys), of the 5 piece indie project called Dead Swells (South Carolina), is a control freak, not saying that, nooooo. I mean I don't even know the man, or his artistic pull, or the circumstantial process of how he manifests his art, or a dozen other things that might contribute to him writing, crafting, playing every instrument (sans drums), and mixing the Dead Swells' self titled album (dropping August 7th via Artist Formula Record Group) all by himself. I do give Nedorestek my utmost respect as that is some "hard to do shit" as my man, Pasqual, at Brooklyn Liquor would say.
The debut record took days that turned in to years worth of blood, sweat and tears co-produced with Wolfgang Zimmerman, whom Nederostek credits for being his “guru and life coach.” All kidding aside, some projects come from a personal place and space and serve as an artistic vision, reflection, points of catharsis that have to come from one person. It is just a matter of something being personally perfect, or as close to it as can be. There is something comforting too, in knowing that all points of reflection start and end with YOU... as will the affection or not so much for the art you make. As Nederostek realizes that this debut is his "truest self":
“In the end, at least it’s the most honest me that’s being put through the speakers and not someone else’s take on what it should sound like.”
The track, Always Thinking Bout It, is the second single from the upcoming record. From the onset it sounds glimmery, like reflections on a pristine lake, with a bouncy soulful beat, and Nederostek's indie pop forward vox. The synth lines are plentiful and surprising. Apart from the dreaminess, the level of R&B / funk affections feel deeper than you initially think the deeper you swim into all the sounds. The jams will make you smile, the staggered rock funk, the dance line amble made me think a bit of Chicano Batman pushed through a sort of surf punk filter and who wouldn't love the "ohhhhhhhhh".
