"one day it was obvious to me"
"Leon Ampersand is a Burlington, Vermont based recording project of Will Peters that is obsessed with mellotron, tambourines and the subject of insects." That is straight off of Ampersand's Facebook page and listening to his artful and wonderfully spacey I Used To Be Cool makes me appreciate his description as it helps to explain the man's askew artistic aesthetic. Love, love, love the sound which feels like an amalgum of early MGMT, ELO, T-Rex and the Beatles. The mellotron, at one point, feels like it is imitating a thermin, the psychedelic wash and dreamy melodies are so lovely and engaging and relatable. Some of us realize at some point that age is taking over at an alarming rate and sometimes we have not become who we thought we would become. Of the track, Peters shares:
"This is a song about pushing 40 and realizing one day that the things you thought were so cool are no longer - you're clothes, your musical tastes, your obsession with Frasier - so much so that when you look in the mirror one day all you see Principal Vernon. You've become the thing you always hated."
It happens to a lot of us Mr. Peters.
Leon Ampersand is Will Peters (guitar, vox), J Mendicino (drums, guitar, keys) and Mike Getty (bass).
