When the track "Warhol/Warhola" by New York based, Famous Letter Writer, washed over me I was a little dumbfounded. I mean, I didn't really understand the curiously shaped words I was hearing sputter from M.I. Devine's proto punk and wonderfully preposterous vocal aesthetic and the head bopping punk whimsical cadence that feels somewhere in between a 1978 punk laboratory experiment and a Mentos commercial made my back straighten up in my chair. I also had a grin on my face so solidly poised that I felt like my face might cramp up in any second.
I remember feeling like this a long time ago when my brain was significantly melted after seeing Elvis Costello on SNL in the late 70's and my musical outlook was changed forever.

Warhol/Warhola" is the first of three singles Famous Letter Writer is releasing in September and October off of W̶a̶r̶h̶o̶l̶a̶, their debut record out 11/11/20 on Big Deep Records, produced by The Shivers.
[This song is the album’s addictive opener, a lo-fi, CBGB celebration of the immigrant--like Warhol’s mother, who arrived in 1921, the year of the first immigration shutdown:]
"We dream like we’re dreamers
Mom says a novena, we pray for the scenesters, the boys becomes teamsters
We dream like we’re dreamers
Refugees like we’re dreamers
They build a wall but don’t you know this world’s a hole through which we crawl"
The players are: M.I. Devine (lead vox, electric guitar), Ru Devine (synth, keyboards, vox), Keith Zarriello of the Shivers, and Ari Folman-Cohen (bass).

Their music conjures Talking Heads, The Strokes, Pulp but especially electro-punk duo Suicide with the vocal energy of Elvis Costello and Jarvis Cocker. Old school and forward-looking, baby.
