"flooding like a house cementing in the cracks..."
Listening to "I, Lucifer" by Massachusetts based alternative rock outfit Dearbones I couldn't help but see raging fires. Flames are beautiful but throughout history and mythology this exothermic chemical process of combustion has been used to terrorize, to kill, to vanquish enemies, innocent or otherwise in the most horrible of deaths. And, yet, throughout history provided warmth, honed weapons to kill impending evil and was used to shine a light, show the way.
The band says "I, Lucifer" is "about knowing your own toxicities and continuing to be your own worst enemy" and with the heavy introspective rock sound with a vocal aesthetic that goes from a crooning whisper to a scream I couldn't help but think of the 90's alternative rock amalgam of bands like Incubus, Soundgarden and Linken Park. It is one of those punctuation songs that would work well as the final coda to a horror movie where the one lone girl battered and bloodied walks out alive.
Music video due to drop on Jan 2nd, 2021.
