"baby you scream and I cry and I hold my heart in my chest"
Aurhe (pronounced "Ah-ree") is the musical project of Lehi, Utah based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Ava Stone. On "Love Song" while churning out alluring alternative rock lines bathed with blues tones, Stone seems to be on the edge, vacillating between heartbreak and seduction but this is not a straight relationship song between lovers but, rather, a torch song about the heady emotions between musical artist and their audience or as she shares:
"love song" (is) about the whirlwind of tears, screams, and joy of a live concert
This feeling of community, of sharing a potent endorphin rush of emotions between a massive or even, not so massive, group of people is so special and intoxicating. It is the kind of experience that we take home and, it, in the end, can shape who we are in demonstrable ways. Those who are into live rock or other genres but kept away during the pandemic, might just feel like they are in an artistic withdrawal or detox (right?).
Stone's guitar work here, which stylistically had me thinking a bit of Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), is totally on point and potent but her songwriting and vocal aesthetic in combo might be her greatest strength. The fluidity of her voice, fully bodied in her lower registers and dreamily drawn in her pushed higher ends shows her emotional vocal range. She moves in between those tones in adept ways with slight pop rock vocal gymnastics (but not overly so). She has a lovely grit, tight fisted but vulnerable as well, intimate on one hand but she can pull up the commanding rock wail when it is called for.
Stone recorded lead / rhythm guitar and bass in a closet in her basement then recorded vocals at Aggressive Audio studio with drums by hired gun, Dave Bloom. Live she performs as Aurhe with bassist Bry Burnham and Ray Davis on drums.
