Cosmic Crooner is the indie rock / pop project (and, or alter ego) of the wildly talented European artist, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Joep Meyer. On Cosmic Crooner's first single "Deep Down In Jazz" Meyer digs deep playing a wide array of instruments (acoustic and electric guitars, glockenspiel, mellotron and synth) and all vocals with a great assist from Jesse Koch (piano, Wurlitzer, spinet), Javièr den Leeuw (bass), Olivier Lucas (drums, percussion), Melle Boersma (pedal steel) and Pieter Vonk (Vibraphone). The track sort of introduces us to the "Cosmic Crooner" although the bittersweet pop rock ballad seems to be about his "last show". The track feels incredibly balanced. Mining the nostalgia and pop sheen of a 60's / 70's sound can sometimes be a tricky thing. The tendency is to over produce but not here. This feels incredibly pure while still paying homages to the blendo earthy styles of artists like Harry Nilsson, Fred Neil and especially John Lennon (I feel a hint of "Watching The Wheels" 1981 posthumus with Yoko Ono) pulling 50's doowop, 60's psyche pop, and 70's chamber pop while stirring in doses of country-fied folk surf rockisms in elegant ways. I am digging Meyer's sadly drawn beautiful vocal aesthetic as well as his absolute smile inducing lead guitar skills.
The accompanying Official video shot on film, inspired by Nouvelle Vague movies, shot on a Canon Scoopic 16m and Braun Nizo S800, only adds to the dazzle.
