"it's there on every corner no matter how late..."
"New Love" by Kiev alt indie rock band HeartBlanch gets under your skin right away. For me, the chunky sound of the electric rhythm is seductively sad. It feels like the electric guitar might have been acoustically mic'd so you can feel that percussive crunch on the strings as well as the amp sound. I maybe wrong but whatever was done, the sound along with the understated, yet, dominant bass, urgent solid drums and lead guitar melodies are wonderfully plaintive and romantic and I am easily lost inside the musical narrative. Mind you, this is all before a word is uttered. The vocal aesthetic, sad and emotional in a sort of reticent way with the patina of a slight Ukrainian accent feels perfect here. While the overall sound and power is bathed in a pop rock, alt rock motif, the vocal melody if isolated and placed within the framework of, let's say, a stark piano would feel like more like a chamber pop song. Therein lies the brilliance here. The lovely melancholia twisted inside the tumultuous alt rock storm (heavy and then heavier) is a wonderful counter position. By the way, when the heavy musical break happens that aforementioned rhythm guitar, now with a fair amount of phase on it, sounds so incredible. Me on the details, I can't help it. Great track that feels cinematic and should grace some other form of media, be on a movie soundtrack or on the next NetFlix binger (yeah it should be) as I can't get enough of it but for now I will enjoy the amazing Official Video as directed by Olga Brigas and featuring the wonderful Aksinia Chervonets.
