"no getting out of the head space you made yourself..."
As stellar as is the pastiche style of Filipino animator, Rommel Joy Valencia, and it is on Stray Fossa's Official Video for "Hypocritic", the lead track off of the Charlottesville, Virginia band's debut album "With You For Ever", it is Stray Fossa's effervescent surreal tones that push the journey. Like a mild hallucination, the punchy bass lines, smashed drums sound and dreamy hushed vox feel at once like British 60's psychedelic, 2010 desert rock meets beach Goth, and a sound of now, a very Stray Fossa-esque amalgam of dream, electro, shoegaze with a sort of chamber folk underbelly.
The band shares:
"Hypocritic" was recorded during a whirlwind day-long session. The process was a departure from our usual meandering approach that sometimes stretches production and arrangement over weeks or months. When we reached out to Filipino animator, Rommel Joy Valencia, about potentially collaborating on a video for the song, we told him that the track is about contradictions. He took this to heart. The art and archival footage collage takes the viewer on a trip through a surreal and fantastical world, one that captures the experience of living in a time that can feel overwhelming and confusing. The medium itself is jarring; the juxtaposition of old news footage, film elements, faces and magazine clippings creates a cookie-cutter universe held together by Valencia's own narrative and interpretation of the song's message.
