"I’m just a tiny cockroach scurrying across a tightrope..."
On "Allergic" by Brooklyn based, Attics, and from their latest 2021 full length "Your Adventure Now", there is such an air of self-deprecation, of the collective fallibility of all humans, and, maybe even, that life itself, while grand and a miracle, is some cosmic joke. Now don't get me wrong, this song propelled by a wonderful vocal aesthetic and a musical narrative that exists somewhere between indie rock with broad chamber pop roots, elements of whimsical sort of 70's Brit pop sounds all filtered in experimental ways is not nihilistic, far from it. The lyrics are adroitly rendered soaring on great vocal melodies (as lead guitar lines serenade is a glam pop way) paint a picture of a relationship going sour or past it's expiration date, just like the fire extinguisher Attics sing about:
"I’m just an expired fire extinguisher
Tired of hanging on the wall
But too afraid to fall
Am I still useful at all?"
In the end, "Allergic", stands as a beautiful disarming diorama of life, love and pain with lyrics that will make you smile and wince. Awww, such is life (rim shot).
