"I've been lost in the fray and too much time has passed without a name / For anything like love or light but still I know what it means..."
RK Maroon hailing from Columbus, Ohio describe what they do as post-slacker art rock and while I have never heard those four words strung together it seems to fit but kinda doesn't. Slacker denotes (to me) sort of chill, heavy psych tones and the tightly wound, punchy jam fest "Close Talker" is not that. It is exquisitely tight and progressively drawn and yeah, there is a party atmosphere but you can say that about the best jams done up in a whole lot of genres and some of the core shapes on the musical breaks feel like an amalgam of Rush and a kick ass samba or calypso band. I can also sense the kind of 90's post hardcore, post grunge muscle and lunacy underneath as well as a kind of metal lounge punk vibe. Aww, shit, maybe I am not making any sense, maybe 'post-slacker art rock' is the perfect description.
Oh, by the way, RK Maroon says that "Close Talker" is "life as seen through the eyes of a feline". Dive in, the water is fine.
