"I'll wade through the starlight..."
Sometimes the mere title of a piece of art gives you an immediate clue as to what you might be in store for. Brooklyn's divergent artist Tacono Gate's latest offering "Your Eyes or Something Like Them" is a curious title. It is the kind of title that would draw me in, make me curious, whether it graced a novel's cover, or a movie trailer or, in this case, a song. The title left to one's imagination feels very mysterious, maybe dark, obtusely poetic and thankfully Tacono Gate's song is all of these things.
It rides on tactile guitar sounds and dissonant synths, a languid drum beat that erupts at the right times and a vocal aesthetic that courses in a moody, brooding way, projected like a stage actor, an amalgam of maybe Paul Banks and Ian Curtis (RIP). There is definitely a dark sense of melancholy, a pained writer, late empty city streets wet from a dense fog, avant rock noir-esque imagery. Lovely stuff that for me feels nostalgic, proto punkian (circa 1979) from the UK. But then my mind goes to that place a lot
