"this world lies and now we're stuck here like flies trapped up inside you're little glass jar..."
The jammy, sideways post rock descent of "Little Glass Jar" by Los Angeles based Golden State, lead by singer-songwriter James Grundler (PALOALTO) and guitarist Marc Boggio, draws you in easily. It's not only the sort of mysterious energy, the sliding heavy bass and engine pumping push of the drums or the potent alt rock guitar work but also Grundler's vocal aesthetic that feels as angsty as it does art rockish artful.
The track is from the outfit's full length 2022 full length "Blood Finger Prick", an album written primarily during the pandemic lockdown while Grundler was coping with the death of a loved one. For those of us who consume art it is a harsh reality and emotional gut punch that some of the best art comes from pain but it is true. "Little Glass Jar" stunning pull had me perusing the other songs on the album and while this is not an album review, "Blood Finger Prick" is a great album. I also have to say, (and I hate to make comparisons) that the overall sound made me think of Radiohead (circa late 90's / mid 2000's) for whatever reason. This feeling extends to Grundler's exquisite vocal aesthetic that does have some Thom Yorkian qualities. It is not like Golden State sounds like Radiohead and in terms of Marc Boggio's guitar work, some might reference Muse more. No it is not anything on the surface but some artistic undercurrents. Golden State is definitely it's own muscular animal.

Golden State is a rock band lead by singer songwriter James Grundler and guitarist Marc Boggio. James was the mastermind behind underground Alt indie band PALOALTO, which had gained success with songs Breathe In and Fade Out In. Writing Blood Finger Prick, through personal loss, and lock downs, James dove head first into uncertainty, "The songs came in like a life preserver, in the turbulent sea".
