"I don't want to write a love songs, I just want to write a song for you..."
The snow storm of emotions encircling "When She Sings" by Northern Ontario, Canada singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jesse Harding, is full of melancholia and maybe veiled apparitions. Held together by plaintive folk acoustic shapes and drones of sound, you might feel a chill skate against your skin as I did upon the first listen, one of sadness and a sense that what you are hearing might be coalesced from something that transpired a long time ago. It has that sort of photograph sense about it, one made of photo paper with a white frame around it, dog eared and scratched. Jesse's vocals, awash in foggy textures and harmonies, hold sadness up front. He opens with the words that feel so intimate as if to be spoken to himself in a manner that casting them out fully might make them disappear. I hear him begin:
"when she sings I hear everything, every solo of imperfection I adore without correction when she sings..."
"when she sings I hear everything, every solo of imperfection I adore without correction when she sings..."
It feels like the most tender of love songs but he also sings: "I don't want to write a love songs, I just want to write a song for you..." and the longer you listen, this feels like it might be a song that has more to do with loss of love, or maybe someone's inability to accept love because that person is broken inside. And after all, we all are broken, cracked in some way, if only a little bit.
"she's weighed down by a heart full of coal, so it all makes sense..."
"When She Sings" is from Jesse's sophomore album "Lingerers" dropping today on December 9th, 2022, a follow up to his debut 2020 album "Little Death".
