"Whole world is twisted and crooked / Suffering is my own / You know who you are / You are a star..."
Like an every morning affirmation or nightly cure for Robert Smith or anyone else who adorns their fingernails in black, "You Are a Star" by Sweden's 8ternalsummerbreak sweetly moves on 90's Goth pop / post punk textured synths and deep thoughts. The lyrics percolated from German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (best known for his 1818 work The World as Will and Representation, which characterizes the phenomenal world as the product of a blind nominal will) and Advaita Vedanta, a Hindu sādhanā (a path of spiritual discipline and experience, and the oldest extant tradition of the orthodox Hindu school Vedānta) set against, as 8ternalsummerbreak describes it "an Ennio Morricone-wave" feels like something between an existential thread arced and made to look like a rainbow.
There is a feeling of whimsy here as well as melancholia, post punk and twee skipping down the yellow brick road. As someone who quite morbidly thinks that when we die we literally waste away into fertilizer I would like to think that Schopenhauer and Vedanta might be in another dimension holding hands and swaying to "You Are a Star", we are after all, at our core (from the carbon in our DNA, the hydrogen, calcium and other elements all formed in stars pre big bang) made of star dust.
