"No air resistance pushing me once I’ve drifted for a while / Up here I see the earth spinning around me like a turnstile, turnstile..."
The natural bubbling and expansive "Still Hoverin'" by Louisville, Kentucky based DOOM has a way of soothing your soul. I mean if this was on the soundtrack of Ari Aster's "Beau is Afraid" as an undercurrent during the most harrowing moments I feel that Beau (and us as the audience) would float above it all and know intrinsically that everything is going to be ok while the fluttering guitar lines, droning ethereal sounds, exquisitely shuffling drum work, tranquil breaks and gentle hushed vox crooning these words:
"No air resistance pushing me once I’ve drifted for a while / Up here I see the earth spinning around me like a turnstile, turnstile / Plenty of room to stretch my legs when there’s nothing up this high / And once you’ve cleared the power lines the hardest bit is behind, far behind
While earth's sputtering
We’re still hoverin’"
While earth's sputtering
We’re still hoverin’"
There is a sense that the seeds of ok-ness of hope eternal that existed forever (but maybe blossomed in this way within the headspace of hippies a long time ago) is a constant percolating maybe especially (the most) in the realm of psychedelic music. Even the dramatic psych rock ascensions while punchy feel gentle, embracing you along the way. This track is from DOOM GONG's 2023 eponymous DEBUT album and about the song, the band shares:
"DOOM GONG, is our attempt to capture the feeling of enjoying the freedom and warmth of the blooming Earth despite its figurative and literal crumbling state"
